Trackwork Bulletin – Sunday, 28th September, 2014

The Illawarra train line is closed this weekend but, surprisingly, you can still have a quick trip TO the Museum – road traffic will, however, mean a slower return bus journey in the afternoon.

WHERE TRAINS ARE YOUR MEANS OF TRANSPORT, TO BE HONEST, IF ANOTHER SUNDAY IS POSSIBLE, IT WOULD BE EASIER!

The fast morning trip is only quicker if you are able to change from your normal rail transport at Central. There are buses from other Illawarra Line Stations, but they are unlikely to be as quick as the express service from Central.

To join the fast trip to Loftus you must board the Express bus Route 2 to Loftus and Sutherland leaving from Chalmers Street at Prince Alfred Park near Central Station.

If you are beginning your journey on another train line, time and energy will be saved if you break your journey at Central. We suggest you stay on board your first train, not changing at Sydenham or Redfern or Town Hall but waiting until Central where you’ll find your Route 2 bus alongside Prince Alfred Park.

On reaching Central Station by your first train, to save time and to keep the walk between train and bus stand as short as possible, on alighting from the train, walk along the platform in the direction of Redfern (that’s to the south) – if unsure which way to go, ask station staff for the Devonshire Street exit. Don’t ask them about the replacement buses – no one will have told them anything!

Go to Chalmers Street, walk south alongside Prince Alfred Park and ask the bus marshalls for the Sutherland and Loftus Express bus service.

The bus takes the fastest available direct route to Sutherland without any other scheduled stops, its second stop is Loftus, – this makes it noticeably faster that the normal weekend all stops train service!

Please note that your bus will deliver you to the western side of Loftus Station – you’ll need to use the easy ramp across the rail lines to reach our Tramway Museum next door.

Your journey back to Central will take a little longer. The buses will have difficulty keeping to time because of road traffic.
