Our volunteer-run collection began in 1950 with Australia’s first preserved electric tram, LP class 154. Over the next 15 years, the collection continued to grow and a museum site was established, eventually resulting in the opening of our operational tramway in March 1965. Today, the Sydney Tramway Museum showcases a rich history spanning from 19th-century classics to the modern light rail forerunner Variotram 2107.

To mark the occasion, we are celebrating 75 years of preservation and 60 years of operational vintage trams for this year’s Sydney Vintage Tramway Festival! Enjoy rides in our classic Sydney fleet – some of which were used in our original 1965 opening – including Lp 154, R 1740, F 393, C 290, P 1497, N 728 and coupled O cars 1111 and 805. We’ll also have an array of other Sydney trams on display throughout the museum (which we’re keeping under wraps for now!)
