P type bogies arrive from New Zealand

Over the past couple of years, the Christchurch Tramway Historical Society workshops at Ferrymead have been working on constructing P car type bogies. Using a complete bogie SPER had obtained from Seashore in the US, as a pattern along with drawings from the SPER arhives they constructed 3 more complete bogies and completely reburbished the ‘orginal’ one.

These were shipped over to Loftus late October 2018 and arrived on 31st of October.

The storage of these bogies became somewhat of a problem, it was decided the best spot for 2 of them was under P1729 where they are intended to go, so P1729 replaced PCC 1014 in the workshop for the day on the 10th of November  – it was lifted and the ‘shop’ bogies replaced by 2 of these ‘new’ ones. The P was out of the workshop and back to being stored in 8 road the same day. The other two are for PR1 1573 which is currently stored off site.

The current work queue in the workshop means it will be some time before more work can be done on 1729 towards making the car operational again.
