Activities

The Sydney Tramway Museum has a whole day’s worth of activities waiting for you!

Enjoy a tram ride towards Sutherland; traveling alongside Rawson Ave towards the former railway substation building. This has recently been restored by Sydney Trains, and is leased to the museum as our secondary display hall, featuring an array of electrical displays and a HO model layout. Open special days only. Or take a tram trip to the former Royal National Park station, with attractions such as the Bungoona lookout and Audley boat shed a short walk away via the various walking track options available in the park.

Visit our main Display Hall, which houses Australia’s oldest electric tram, the only prison tram in the southern hemisphere and unique counterweight dummy from Balmain. Historic photographs of Sydney’s street transport during the tramway era, and many smaller items associated with the trams, are also on display.

There are electric barbecues, picnic area and other facilities to enjoy, or grab a bite to eat at the Kiosk which serves hot and cold food, ice creams, tea and coffee, and a variety of drinks. You can also pop into our Souvenir Shop and pick up a book or DVD to learn more about the trams.

Safety Points When Travelling by Tram

  • The Museum’s vehicles are irreplaceable historic items. Please treat them with respect.
  • Please refrain from smoking, eating or drinking whilst travelling.
  • Do not operate the bell cords or the emergency braking equipment as these are safety items for the use of the Museum staff.
  • Do not lean out of windows and doors.
  • Remain seated at all times while the tram is in motion.

Virtual Tours

Before your next visit, feel free to take a virtual 3D tour through the museum’s running shed and display hall, and see inside two of our historic Sydney trams: F 393 and R 1740, complete with info bites about each car. Many thanks to Transport Heritage NSW for this project.
